Summary
Your Markdown documents stay on your device. We don't upload them, we don't read them, and we don't use them to train anything. This page explains the details.
What we collect
- Drafts you write. Saved to your browser's local storage. Never sent to our servers.
- Theme and editor preferences. Also stored locally so the app remembers your settings.
- Anonymous request logs. Our hosting provider records standard web request metadata (timestamp, IP address, user agent) for abuse prevention and performance monitoring.
What we don't collect
- The content of your Markdown documents
- Personally identifying information beyond what's in standard server logs
- Behavioral analytics or cross-site tracking
Clarification. When Google Analytics is enabled on our deployment (only if a measurement ID is configured), it runs as first-party, aggregated usage analytics — not cross-site advertising profiling — and may rely on cookies or similar storage under Google's policies. Where required in your region, consent or other lawful bases apply as described on our GDPR information page.
Optional analytics
We may enable Google Analytics on some deployments to understand aggregate traffic (for example page views and coarse technical metadata). We do not use it to read your Markdown, and we do not combine it with your local drafts. You can use browser controls, opt-out tools offered by Google where available, or extensions that block analytics scripts.
Cookies
Markdown Viewer does not set tracking cookies. The site stores your theme preference and drafts in your browser's local storage, which is functionally similar but is not shared with our servers.
If optional analytics is enabled, scripts loaded from Google may set cookies or use local storage as documented by Google; those technologies are separate from the editor's draft storage.
Third parties
We use the following third-party services, all of which we've audited for privacy:
- Netlify — hosting and edge content delivery.
- Google Fonts — served statically and self-hosted via Next.js Font.
- Google Analytics — optional; loaded only when our deployment configures a measurement ID. Provides aggregated usage metrics; see Optional analytics above.
International data transfers
Hosting (for example Netlify) and optional analytics subprocessors may process limited technical data — including in the United States — subject to their published terms and, where applicable, standard contractual clauses or similar safeguards. See our GDPR information page for a jurisdiction-focused summary.
Retention
Short-lived server or CDN logs follow our hosting provider's retention schedules. Drafts and preferences in your browser persist until you clear site data. Analytics retention windows (when enabled) depend on how our analytics property is configured.
Your rights
Because we don't collect personal data, there's nothing for us to delete on request. You can clear your local data at any time from your browser's site settings.
Standard web logs or correspondence may still qualify as personal data in some laws. Where applicable, you can contact us via our GitHub repository and consult our GDPR information page for EU/UK-focused rights and supervisory authority guidance.
